Prozac belongs to the SSRI drugs, which stands for “selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor”.

What Are Prozac Side Effects

It is used in treating depression, obsessive-compulsive behaviour (in adults as well as in children), bulimia and panic attacks. This medication is very commonly used in the United States of America, and there were not many adverse effects reported.

Nevertheless, you should know that there can be some side effects like sleeping disorders, vomiting and/or nausea; general weakness, digestion problems, diarrhea, headaches, appetite loss, nervousness and anxiety, mouth dryness, dizziness, increased sweating; sexual issues like impotence and problems with ejaculating.

There are also some less common side effects of Prozac, but they are possible, and you should know about them: skin color changes (flushing), nightmares, digestion problems (constipation, vomiting and gas), fever; one of the side effects can also be a weight loss (which is a result of appetite loss and reduced food intake caused by Prozac taking). In other cases, there can be quite the opposite side effect, like weight gain. There can be a pain in the chest, blurred vision and changes in blood pressure (it can go high).

We should mention some rare side effects as well. They may be rare, but when they do occur, they can be quite severe and cause rather serious conditions that require medical help. Those are: mental issues like suicidal behavior, aggressive behavior, unusual behavior (or even dangerous behavior); panic disorders can also occur, so as nervousness and anxiety; extremely unnatural mood changes (quite unexplainable and unexpected). Related to this drug is so-called “serotonin syndrome” which is very uncommon, but still possible side effect and manifests through hallucinations, heartbeat irregularities, mental changes, hyperactivity, certain types of seizure or in some cases even coma.
